Originally named for his private estate, the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFair Lane\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e retained its name throughout its time on the Cotton Belt. In 1942 it was sold by Henry Ford to the St Louis Southwestern Railroad.  As delivered the car was standard Pullman Green with a black roof. Shortly after delivery to the Cotton Belt the roof was painted Pearl Grey. This car represents its appearance from 1953-1959 when it was painted in Cotton Belt’s interpretation of the parent company’s “Daylight” scheme, however with a silver roof to better handle the warmer climate. In 1959 it was repainted into the SP Simulated Stainless paint scheme with a red stripe on the letterboard. It can be considered one of the most successful four-axle diesel road-switchers ever produced by the builder. These 1,600hp locomotives were powered by an ALCO 244 V-12 engine which was complimented by rugged GE electrical components. The RS-3 was truly a versatile locomotive. It could be found in virtually every type of service from passenger and commuter runs to heavy-haul and local freight assignments. Original owners of the RS-3 tended to be in the eastern and central regions of the US (with heavier concentrations in the northeast and southeast).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eDuring this same time-period, ALCO offered a six-axle road-switcher which was more commonly found in the west. The RSD-4\/5 was externally very similar to the RS-3, having six-axle trucks as an obvious spotting feature. They produced the same 1,600hp as an RS-3, but offered increased tractive effort due to the use of a larger generator. Many RSD-4\/5s were assigned to operate in mountainous territory (with varying degrees of success) on the Southern Pacific, Santa Fe and the Utah Railway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eIn seeking an alternative to the EMD SD7 the Southern Pacific Railroad purchased 23 RSD-5’s from ALCO in 1952. 9 went to Texas \u0026amp; New Orleans (170-176, 185-186) and SP (5294-5307). They were well received enough that further orders were made. These models represent the locomotives as delivered from ALCO in their Tiger Stripe Paint Schemes. The Pacific lines ALCOS were used extensively all over California and in helper service on Tehachapi where they could be seen helping both freight and passenger trains over the mountain. By 1960 the SP had transferred every one of these units to the Atlantic lines where they would finish their service. The PRR utilized a massive one-piece steel casting for these F30 flatcars, and that sturdy construction meant that many of these cars lasted an incredibly long time, often with a second life in work train (MOW) service.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Rio Grande never had any F30 flatcars specifically however they did have near identical cast flatcars built by General Steel Castings. General Steel also provided F30 bodies to the Pennsy. For model purposes the cars are identical. A large portion of the Rio Grande's MOW flat car fleet was made up of riveted 53' AAR standard flatcars. Some of the fleet had cast frames, and some had welded frames.
